The Copper Family of Rottingdean, Sussex - The Larks

Workshop
Date TBC

The Coppers have been given the title of England’s first family of folk. For at least five generations, this family has sung in harmony. Harmony singing is rare in English folk song and the Copper Family have contributed more songs in harmony than the rest of the country put together. They have written down their songs, been collected over the generations, and have documented their lifestyles and folk customs. The family were mostly shepherds and farm labourers and their songs reflect that background. They have influenced every harmony group since then and their songs are common in NZ sessions including at least early Canterbury Folk Festivals. Come along to learn and sing.
