Just Janie

Hailing from the heart of Central Otago, Just Janie is emerging as a compelling new voice in Aotearoa alt-folk and Americana. Stepped in the golden warmth of the late sixties and seventies Laurel Canyon folk scene, her music reacts to modern experiences through a nostalgic lens.
Following the release of her debut Muse and Musician, Just Janie gained global traction, surpassing one million streams. The EP's rich, nostalgic sound drew praise for its heartfelt songwriting and timeless aesthetic. As The Spinoff (NZ) noted, “If you find yourself on a hike this weekend… mind daydreaming about Laurel Canyon, it might be the perfect time for Just Janie’s ‘Muse and Musician’.”
Just Janie was selected as part of Ōtautahi’s 2024 OMAP programme facilitated by Saltbox Studios alongside RDU 98.5FM and released her latest single 'Musings in the Breakfast Aisle'. 'A vocally rich and powerful lament of indecision, the song was part of the menu on NZ On Air‘s February 2025 New Tracks compilation' NZ Musician (NZ).
Just Janie & Her Band recorded their first studio album ‘Mythology of the Girls’ in midwinter 2025, at Sublime Studios in the Waitaki. Each track contemplates the desire for an era, experienced through social media, documentaries, books and film juxtaposed against the reality; where women faced a myriad of societal limitations. The songs are based on personal experiences in Aotearoa as a young woman, an artist, a musician, a mental health worker and advocate. These personal anecdotes are mirrored by stories of women throughout history, who walked so we could run. The Album is set to be released in Autumn 2026.
